PGC Youth Scholarship Fact Sheet

The Philadelphia Glider Council is a non-profit, member owned club devoted to the advancement and enjoyment of the sport of soaring.  To that end we have established a program to help young people to become pilots.

What happens when you take flight instruction?

Flight instruction is available each weekend, weather permitting, and on Wednesday evenings.  Instruction may be available at other times as well.  On weekend instruction days, students who are scheduled to fly, are expected to appear at the glider port at 8-8:30 AM to help prepare the aircraft for operations and to be briefed.  Instruction starts at 9AM and wraps up at about noon.  Depending on the number of students and available instructors, the student can expect 2-3 flights in one of our 4 Grob 103 dual control sailplanes.

Sailplanes are typically launched by tow-line connection to one of the club’s 2 powered tow planes, piloted by one of our expert tow pilots, to an altitude of 2,500 feet above ground level.  The typical training flight is 10-20 minutes in duration.  Depending on student aptitude, frequency of training, and other factors, solo flight can be expected after 25-45 lessons and passage of ground instruction and the FAA written test. Solo may be achieved on or after the 14th birthday. After solo, the student will continue with instructional training, as well as supervised solo flight, until the instructor feels confident that the student is qualified to take the FAA license check ride with an FAA examiner.  Licensure can occur at 16 years of age.
